Take a few days off from writing for Fat City and boy, things change dramatically in the world of bacon. If there's any question about whether our society is headed for greatness or the future envisioned in Wall-E, the answer lines up pretty well with the latest bacon news. I'll leave it to you to decide what the following portends.
Since the Bacon Explosion burst on the scene, we've seen news that KFC is launching the Double Down -- a bacon and cheese sandwich with fried chicken for bread and sauce which Charles Ferruzza correctly dubbed as "vaguely threatening." So much for that healthy grilled chicken revolution. Although in its defense, KFC notes this sandwich has under 600 calories. It may be time to see one of these things in person -- the pictures look goo-tastic.
Over on ThinkGeek, Tactical Bacon is for sale. It's 54 pieces of fully cooked bacon, pressure sealed in a 9 oz. can for $15.99. The site claims it will last for more than 10 years in the can. It has to be better than the cheeseburger in a can. Seems pricey, but can you put a price on having bacon in your fallout shelter?
And back to the clip that leads the post, from a recent episode of the reality show Wife Swap. Moral judgments aside, it's weird to see a small child berate a grown woman like a man who is displeased with his dinner options. His righteous anger at watching bacon being thrown away is infused with a slight Southern drawl (he is the junior embodiment of Randy Taylor's Jimmy Dean sausage rant).
"I want my bacon. I gotta tell you something, bacon is good for me," says the portly young man before deciding to run away.
I'm sure this thing is super-tasty (fried chicken and bacon? Can you go wrong with that?). But given that one KFC chicken breast is 370 calories, I'm not convinced their sandwich is less than 600 calories. Perhaps they consider one sandwich as two servings of 600 calories each. Or, perhaps the sandwich is much smaller than it appears to be in the pictures.
In any case, anyone concerned about the caloric content of this sandwich probably needs to reconsider their diet approach. ;-)
