Now while I'm a big fan of Middle Eastern cuisine (although not particularly of the roasted meat sandwich known as the gyro), the fare at this unassuming little cafe -- which isn't that cheap -- can't hold a candle to the dishes served at the equally casual, but superior Jerusalem Bakery or the full-service Aladdin Cafe or the Jerusalem Cafe. In fact, the person taking the orders is often the same guy cooking the food and maybe because he's busy, none too friendly at that. The gyro sandwiches aren't terrific and the combination vegetarian plate was a big disappointment: the dolmas tasted as if they had just been defrosted, the falafel had been fried to the point that the two thin discs would have made better coasters than lunch, and the generous portion of hummus, while creamy and good, had been doused with what appeared to be half a bottle of olive oil. We asked for an extra piece of pita bread -- priced at 50 cents and not served warm, by the way -- and the counter guy suggested we buy the $3 bag of pita instead.

I eat fallafel at the "Gyro Shack" quite regularly. Don't know what happened the time you were there.
Tonite I bopped in and there were lots of folks saying they are rating the food at 4 or even 5 stars! (this is just reality reporting, I do not think there is any rating for 5 stars).
So anyway you should check it out again, Kahlid is really great.

omg i thought id never find you ! this place is so good but the main reason i come here is because of the cook , you know who you are , the tall cutie i always smile at everytime i come in there , you seem so shy around me , i wish one day you could just tell me more than hi ! maybe i can teach you a few things in the kitchen if you know what i mean !!! lol
Who's the RACIST??? I am so sick of hearing racist comments, from a minority group who think they are still being discriminated against. The only racist comments I ever hear come from the black community towards the white. I, for one, am getting sick of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't think that I am alone.

I love it! Nothing like an honest bit of writing to fully capture the spirit of a place, good or bad.
God knows I'll eat almost anything deep-fried, but I nearly broke a tooth on the "falafel."
