It's about time spirit drinkers got a new goal.
The idea of mug clubs is well established. You get a discount for having a membership at a brewery or a card that is stamped as you try each of the beers on draft or in bottles at a given bar. This is often a laudable goal for beer enthusiasts -- or at least a way to justify the amount of time spent in pubs.
But for those who want something more than a bucket of beers, word of a Booze Bucket List comes via our sister food blog, the Houston Press' Eating Our Words. Houston's Anvil Bar & Refuge has created a list of the 100 cocktails to drink before you die. You get a two-side scorecard to mark each drink you've tried.
While in practice this sounds slightly cumbersome and the likely choice
for newly minted consultants or investment bankers, it does serve to
open up the dialogue for drinks that might have disappeared into the
ether. And the opportunity to argue what should be included on anybody's
list.
Also, cocktails tend to be habit-forming and it can be difficult to step
away from your favorite drink. So, like the oversized menu at Cheesecake
Factory, a list of 100 offers up enough
choices to help you venture outside your comfort zone.
For example, at number 68 is a Pimm's Cup
(Pimm's No. 1 gin, lemon, soda water, and cucumber). It's a British import, and substituting ginger ale for a
slightly sweeter drink might make it easier to like on the first
go-round. I am frankly terrified of number 30, El Diablo (tequila,
creme de cassis, lime and ginger beer). It seems like an exotic kitchen
sink drink, the kind that makes you knock on the wrong door at the end
of the evening.
