So, is there such a restaurant? Well, the Raphael Restaurant in the Raphael Hotel used to have a little dance floor near the space, just off the bar, where musicians or a pianist play. But since the restaurant was renovated earlier this year and became Chaz on the Plaza, the music stayed, but the dance floor did not. "We have jazz musicians every night except Sunday and Monday," said a hotel employee, "but there's no more dancing."
So I called one of the ballroom dance clubs in town and asked one of the instructors if she knew of any restaurants where couples could dine and dance. She could think of only one: Plaza III on the Country Club Plaza. So I called there and was told that yes, on weekends there was still live music in the club downstairs, but since the entertainment varies "sometimes you can dance to it and sometimes you can't."
Just when I thought I'd never find a place for Valerie to kick up her heels, I called the Oak Bar, adjacent to the Oak Room Restaurant at the InterContinental Hotel on the Country Club Plaza. Yes, I was told: the bar features live entertainment several nights a week and yes, there's a dance floor.

Rest assured we have communicated this to the staff.
Thanks for the news Steve. I THOUGHT I saw a dance area at Chaz the last time I was there. I think someone needs a chat with the staff over there. The young woman I spoke to was very particular about no dancing in the lounge. Perhaps she's from one of those religious sects that frowns on dancing. I only frown on BAD dancing.
I am Steve Miller, Director of Operations for Lighthouse Properties which owns and operates the Raphael Hotel and Chaz on the Plaza. I would like to correct an error. Chaz does offer the same cozy area for dancing, on our new cork flooring, in the lounge.
Meredith: Maybe the staff at the Oak Bar thinks that since the room has a floor, it counts as a dance floor. It's the same thinking that says a piece of folded paper is a "napkin."
I have been to the Oak Bar a number of times in the last couple of years...where is the dance floor? There is no dance floor unless you count dancing in the lobby near the bar.
I just called the Copa Room -- good thinking, Berry! -- and yes, that restaurant offers live entertainment Wednesday through Saturday and I was told that customers have been known to do a little swing dancing when the music is jumping.
P.S. I just checked out the Oak Bar for the first time a few nights ago and it could possibly be the most gorgeous bar in KC.
When the Copa Room was on Broadway I would see some classy (mostly older) folks sipping martinis and waltzing to live Sinatra covers after finishing their veal... but I guess that was a different time in KC (2006). Maybe the new location offers the same experience? These days, I suppose you could eat some nachos and then take a spin on the stripper pole at Tengo Sed Cantina in the P&L?
