Meatovations: The next steps in cheeseburgers

​Every so often in our history, hamburgers take a great leap forward. Burgers got upgraded when cheese was introduced into the equation; blue cheese and Kobe Beef seemingly changed everything again in the '80s and '90s. Now cheese and another idea from Japan are spearheading the latest innovations

The Chicago Tribune reviews two newly opened joints near Chicago that are hoping to redefine the cheeseburger. Gabutto Burger, a Japanese import, serves patties that are 80 percent beef, 20 percent pork, and held together by egg and breading. The wildest offering sounds like the teriyaki egg burger, which features a fried egg on top of a Teriyaki-glazed patty. 

At the other end of the spectrum is a decidedly American reinvention of the burger from Clutch, a restaurant and bar west of downtown Chicago. The Clutch Easy Burger is a 1/3 pound patty covered in 1/2 pound of shredded cheddar cheese. It sounds like an unholy fondue baby. 

Farther east, sliders are no longer the purvey of White Castle alone, as mini burgers continue to be a popular food trend. This Serious Eats review of burger joints in Northern New Jersey includes a number of mouth-watering shots of sliders that look grilled to perfection. At just a few bites, mini cheeseburgers are practically diet food. 

If all of this has inspired you to make your own monstrosities or miniature burgers at home, keep in mind the Barf Blog's technique for making sure a burger is properly cooked. The secret is in your hand. Meanwhile, we can only hope that new burger products come to Kansas City, since we're supposed to be at the forefront of all things meat-related.

I was just surfing threw when I found your site. Not much for meatloaf my mom used to make me eat it, Yuck. Now key lime pie is another story.
That I love, It makes me happy. The best I have ever eaten in my life was at a place called key west in north Carolina. Yea, the card says it was kutchies key west bar & grill.
Now that place, I'am here to tell ya makes some awesome key lime pie. I kept their card because I am going back to that place the next time we hit the east coast.
Hell, now I've made myself hungry for it just typing on your review here. Must make a trip to kutchie's soon.
That key lime pie makes me happy and thats
a good thing.

WTF is the point of even including the meat on that glorified cheese sandwich, I wonder? No way anyone can actually taste it when its covered in so much cheddar. That's just effing ridiculous.

KC has the Best Burger In The World (flea market). They really don't need meatloaf burgers... of course, they are welcome.. but KC is doing just fine as far as burgers are concerned, either way.
