Cakes are one of the easiest ways to go off the rails in the kitchen. The cake falls flat, the icing doesn't set or (perhaps worst of all) it looks beautiful but tastes awful. While it might be tempting to opt for the sheet cake from Costco, even the professionals make mistakes -- although most likely at the request of a client.
And the worst always seem to find their way to Cake Wrecks, the aptly named blog by Jen Yates. The book based on her blog, Cake Wrecks: When Professional Cakes Go Hilariously Wrong, from local publishing house Andrews McMeel, is set to hit the market on October 1. The photo-driven book includes snarky commentary and more about the blog.
Serious Eats caught up with Yates to talk about how the book deal came about and the origins of her Web site back in May 2008. One of the first orders of business was for Yates to define a cake wreck:
The classic Wrecks are those that are misspelled, misunderstood, or trying way too hard to be creative (hellooo, pregnant belly cakes!). And, of course, you can't go right with tons of airbrushing and plastic flotsam.
