Down the hatch: Lychee Ramune drink

I had never enjoyed a drink that requires me to perform five steps before I can even raise it to my lips. But this is the fun of Shirakiku's carbonated Lychee Ramune drink -- a Japanese soda in a codd bottle.

In order to get at the carbonated drink inside the glass bottle, you must first remove the seal from the top and detach the plunger from the center of the cap.

Once the plunger's been removed from the center, you place it in a

small depression at the top of the bottle. Then place the heel of your

palm on top, while steadying the base of the bottle with the bottom of

your hand. And push ... hard. Harder enough that you would expect it

to hurt.

An explosion of bubbles tells you've done it right and you're ready to

enjoy. If you're having difficulty figuring out the process, there are

dozens of tutorials (like this one) on YouTube. Just type in "Ramune."

On to the actual drink. (Although in truth, the only reason to buy it is the experience of opening it.) It's carbonated and clear like seltzer, and while it has a sugary flavor, it isn't as sweet as American fruit sodas. The initial burst of sweetness fades as you swallow, but it's not unpleasant like the diluted flavor of Izzyesque.

And so, I've come to the conclusion that all sodas should require you

to tame them before drinking them. It gives you a greater appreciation

for the sweetness of drink-tory.

A 6.7 ounce bottle is $1.79 at World Market. It was available in peach, strawberry, orange, and lychee flavor.

The marble remains in the top of the bottle, as you enjoy Ramune.
