The good news for the world of beer drinkers is that new brews are always popping up on store shelves. The bad news is they might not be an improvement over what you're currently drinking.
Anheuser-Busch recently rolled out two new additions to the family with Budweiser Select 55 and Bud Light Golden Wheat. Budweiser Select 55 was the only one of three potential 55-calorie brews test marketed this summer that was actually released. The reviews are all across the board (it was universally panned on Beer Advocate), but most people seem to wonder if the market really needed another low-calorie competitor to Michelob Ultra. The market should have that answer shortly.
The voices at Beer Advocate were only slightly more sold on Bud Light Golden Wheat -- it gets a barely passing C+ as an aggregate score. Although the average drinker might find this a nice alternative to Bud Light.
Meanwhile in Kansas City, Boulevard has announced its first joint effort on a beer as brewmaster Steven Pauwels will team with fellow native Belgian Jean-Marie Rock (brewmaster at Orval) on an Imperial Pilsner. It's hard not to get excited from Rock's description in the release issued by Boulevard:
"The beer will be made in a very traditional way," said Rock. "The methods by which it will be brewed, fermented, and lagered are no longer employed, though they made this beer fantastic. It is time to get a beer like this back in a glass."But since they won't start the brewing process until the end of this month, you should make alternate imbibing plans. If you feel like getting out for a drink, Barley's Brewhaus
in Overland Park celebrates its 14th anniversary all week long.
Pints are $3 and Jager bombs are $4 on Thursday.
All of this leads up to the third annual KC BeerFest on Saturday at the Legends at Village West. And when you need to recover, you can always head back to Barley's for the last day of anniversary week to watch football and nurse $3 Bloody Mary's.
