Battle of the Dishes: Fast-food breakfast

Does a fried chicken biscuit sandwich really sound that appealing for breakfast? Not really, unless you're a serious fan of Chick-fil-A and love to start the day with a little cardboard box of Chick-n-Minis: three little buttered biscuits, about the size of a 50-cent piece, stuffed with a ball of not-so-crispy fried chicken, slightly larger than a marble. Very salty, with 2.5 grams of saturated fat and 260 calories. Even with a container of orange juice, not so good for you.

The breakfast sandwiches at Chick-fil-A are comparable to those served at their biggest morning rival: McDonald's. Both offer bacon-egg-and cheese biscuits, sausage biscuits and sausage breakfast burritos.

Chick-fil-A has bigger biscuits (and flakier than McDonald's, which tend to be dry), but the one with bacon, egg and cheese has a funny aftertaste with 490 calories and 12 grams of saturated fat! The McDonald's version of the same sandwich hardly tastes much better; although there's no distinct aftertaste, it's a salty sandwich -- and with 420 calories and 12 grams of fat. The sausage, egg and cheese version is just as fattening.

So who wins this battle? Neither! Go eat a bowl of oatmeal -- it's cheaper too!

The Student Union closes – and everything must go!

Kansas City’s West Bottom bohemian boys will soon be Northeasterners. Ron Megee and Jon Fulton Adams are selling their West Bottoms loft and moving to the historic Old Northeast. This means the end of the Student Union, the theme party paradise Megee and Adams hosted in their loft. Last weekend, Megee and Adams held an estate sale to unload their excess – including the giant iconic “R” above the stairway (sticker price, $150).

Hardee's is the king of fast food breakfast. Even my wife admits to the glory that is their bacon, egg & cheese.

I have been chomping at the bit to head up there and try their fried bologna breakfast sandwich.
