Here are some random newsy items from my reporter's notebook.

Chili Cookoff Benefit

Great chili comes from the heart, so the third annual chili cook-off sponsored by the Wyandotte Homeless Services Coalition is a no-brainer. The event is slated for Thursday, November 19, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Wilhemina Gill Services Center (645 Nebraska Avenue) in Kansas City, Kansas. Entry is $5 with proceeds going to the Milla Massey Scholarship Fund for "youth who face homelessness."

O'Fallon's Beer Tasting in Shawnee tonight

A bit of Weston, Missouri, comes to Shawnee, Kansas, with the O'Fallon Beer Tasting at Barley's Brewhaus. You'll have the chance to sample five beers tonight, starting at 7 p.m. -- including a Rye IPA that has been brewed but not yet released to the public. The tasting starts with a pumpkin ale and a five day IPA paired with a potato chowder.

Blue Moose's Winter Menu, Brunch Added in Prairie Village

The winter months don't have to mean heavier fare. The Blue Moose Bar and Grill

has launched a new series of winter salads: the pecan encrusted goat cheese salad ($9.99), pear and walnut

salad ($10.99), chicken orzo salad ($9.99), and gyro greek salad

($10.99). And the Prairie Village location

(4160 W. 71st Street) is now serving brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with made-to-order omelets

($6.99, plus 25 cents per topping) and the Mountain Stack Pancakes

($7.99) among the offerings.

Guitar Center Extends Canned Food Drive

Sometimes slackers win, even slacker do-gooders. Guitar Center has extended its food drive and will be accepting non-perishable items until November 28. The Overland Park store (6700 W. 119th

Street) and Independence store (3911 Bolger Road) are participating

locally. Customers get a 10 percent-off coupon in exchange for donating

a nonperishable item in a benefit for Harvesters.
