It's hard not to like Adam Richman, an everyman who takes on an eating challenge in every episode of the Travel Channel's Man v. Food. He isn't a competitive eater, just a food show host who happens to be astonishingly good at meeting the biggest eating challenge in a given city.
And yet it's easy to dismiss the travelogue/food show because of the oversized eating hook. Richman talked about this on The Johnny Dare Morning Show on 98.9 FM back on September 2.
"There's great, great food in Kansas," said Richman, who hadn't heard of the Bacon Explosion but tried to make it clear that oversized foods are not what the show is meant to be about:
"People very often mention dishes we should have on a show. That's kind of the challenge to keeping the show. There's a fine line between doing something that is super indulgent and something that is super interesting that might be unhealthy for unhealthy's sake."
Kansas City unfortunately didn't make the roster for season two, which has three more
episodes to air. Little Rock, Arkansas, is the subject of the November
25 show; Tucson, Arizona, is slated for December 2; and New Jersey will
be theme of the season finale on December 9.
In an interview this week with the Quad-City Times, Richman explains that in a culture where everybody believes they could be the next great competitive eater, hosting a show that includes eating challenges can, at times, be unpleasant:
"The show is 'Man v. Food,' not 'Man v. Man,' yet I get every hairy-chested mouthbreather popping off at the top of their neck. I don't care if you can eat more than me," he said. "All I'm trying to do is give you my best shot and know these challenges are out there. I get a lot of aggressive, loud dudes trying to challenge me."Perhaps it's time we viewed five-pound burritos and monster sundaes as a common foe, a challenge that would best be served through an eating cooperative rather than an eating challenge.
Showing 1-1 of 1
His reactions when he bites into something drive me absolutely insane. Other than that, it's a good show. He should try spinning off Man Vs Toilet on the internet, featuring the aftermath of the challenges. It would be wildly popular.
