Farm to Market Bread Company has reinvented two holiday breads -- Panettone ($9.99) and Stollen ($12.99) -- putting small twists on the classic Italian and German baked goods.

"We have worked hard perfecting the recipes for these specialty holiday breads. We hope our customers enjoy eating them as much as we enjoy baking them," says bakery owner Mark Friend.

The Italian Panettone is usually made with raisins and candied fruit. The Farm to Market offering has cranberries and orange in a "light, cake-like bread." To give the bread its distinctive dome shape, the bakery cools the loaves upside down.

Besides being sold in grocery stores, the Panettone is also being used as the base for the bread pudding at Jasper's Restaurant.

"I have been making Panettone Bread Pudding at Jasper's for many years," says chef Jasper Mirabile Jr. "It is now a tradition to serve this during the holiday season to my

guests, and I'm fortunate that Farm to Market Bread makes a top quality

and authentic Panettone."

Farm to Market's other holiday bread is a Stollen -- the classic German Christmas bread made of almond paste, almonds and rum soaked raisins. After it comes out of the oven, the bread is brushed with butter and powdered sugar to give it added sweetness. It's essentially a much more enjoyable version of fruitcake.

The stollen goes well with a latte or hot chocolate -- those who've never had it might taste similarities to biscotti or halva. It would also be enjoyable with a glass of port or a stout beer.

These are ultimately the kinds of breads that you want to share on the holidays -- a good replacement option if you're a guest looking to bring something other than wine.

Or you can make your own stollen - it is REALLY easy, and stollen doesn't always have marzipan in it (there are several variations). And fresh stollen can't be beat, all warm and soft and tasty. It's a lot better than the store-bought versions, which can be very dry.

And I gotta stick up for fruitcake. If made right (made with dried fruit, not candied, and soaked in booze), it really is amazing. :)

as much as I like Farm To Market, for the people who don't want to pay these prices 2 versions of made in Germany stollen are sold at Aldi for $3.99 or $4.50 and different versions of made in Italy Panettone are sold at Big Lots for $5, also World Market has them for little more. I am not saying these are superior, made with love and a secret mix of 11 herbs and spices,I am just saying you can save a little if you wanted to.
