Anybody can play quarters or kings, but when was the last time you had a real mental challenge while drinking?
Puzzle Time Wine was one of the first to offer up a different kind of drinking game, making its mark almost five years ago at Trader Joe's with a interactive wine label that doubled as a crossword puzzle. (After a few glasses it was harder figuring out how to write on a curved surface than actually solving the puzzle.)
The blog Bevlaw points to a Fetzer Vineywards wine label which has a rebus -- a pictogram that spells out a given word or sentence -- for wine drinkers to enjoy. These are only two small examples of creative marketing, but whether it really works still ultimately depends on the taste of the wine inside the bottle.
But why haven't more wine companies taken advantage of the possibilities for games on labels? It would be easy to promote a geo-caching contest -- an online treasure hunt that relies on GPS coordinates -- via a series of limited release bottles. And while the appeal of Sudoku escapes me, I think there might be quite a bit of overlap between wine drinkers and sodoku enthusiasts.
All of which leads to this: If you're looking to challenge your palate locally, try the cognac tasting at JP Wine Bar tomorrow from 6:30 to 8 p.m., where you can sample three varieties -- V.S., V.S.O.P, and X.O. Borderies from Camus Cognac -- for $10. Wine Club members can attend for free. And best of all, everybody wins at tastings.
