It's time to take off the oven mitts and get serious about holiday cooking. And if your Thanksgiving meal didn't quite pan out, here are lots of options this month for rescuing your
traditional Christmas dinner. But it means calling in the professionals.
The Kansas City Culinary Center offers a class on Holiday Cupcake "Ornaments" on Saturday, December 12, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Instructor Celia Shea teaches how to create homemade fondant and design a series of mini cupcakes that look like Christmas tree ornaments. The class costs $45.
The following week (Saturday, December 19) at the same time, Gary Hild
leads a Holiday High Tea class for the culinary center. In addition to enjoying a classic tea
party, students learn the proper method for brewing tea and
preparing traditional sweet and savory treats such as scones and
chicken salad with toasted almonds.
Pie crusts can be as important as the pie. Learn how to weave a pie crust and create a half-and-half pie at the University of Missouri-Kansas City's Communiversity, where Gabrielle Lawson Person leads a class on Tuesday, December 22, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The class is $9, plus $3 for materials; and you can register online.
The Cooking Studio at Whole Foods in Overland Park has a number of cooking classes designed to keep you healthy and free of stress this holiday season. On Saturday, December 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. is "Lisa's Kitchen Prescription for Prevent Cold & Flu." Lisa Markley, MS, RD, leads a class on foods that boost your immunity and what's in your diet that makes you more susceptible to being sick. The class is $20, and you'll learn to make sweet potato tapioca and miso-garlic and shiitake mushroom soup with chicken.
On Friday, December 18 from 6 to 8 p.m., Lenora Wauttaux -- the "herb lady" from the Overland Park Arboretum -- leads a class on aromatherapy and soothing scents. Students will sip on herbal wassil and discover how scent is tied into mood. The class costs $20.
