If you're unfamiliar with the wide range of Belgian beers, you've got an opportunity to learn from one of the masters on Tuesday, December 15, at 6 p.m. That's when the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium hosts a tasting for six of New Belgium Brewery's seasonal and regular offerings.
Lauren Salazar, New Belgium's "sensory guru," will be on hand to discuss the process at the brewery and the styles you're tasting, each of which will be paired with either meat or cheese.
"It's a rare treat be able to attend a tutored tasting event with
someone as highly qualified as Lauren Salazar. She's at the top of her
field in terms of sensory analysis, so beer enthusiasts will not want
to miss this unique opportunity," says Matt Gardner, Flying Saucer's
general manager.
New Belgium Brewing Company is based out of Fort Collins, Colorado. It was started in 1989, the same year Boulevard began tapping kegs. Most people have heard of New Belgium's Fat Tire Amber Ale, but the brewery also makes classic Belgian styles including an Abbey and Trippel.
Tickets are $20 for UFO members, $25 for everybody else. Reservations are recommended and you can reserve a spot by calling 816-221-1900 or stopping by the Flying Saucer.
If you can't make the tasting, I'd recommend a visit to Royal Liquors -- they've got a strong lineup of import beers, with a number of Belgian offerings. Consider the Lindeman's line of lambics as an after dinner beer -- everybody will love the peach (peche) lambic, while raspberry (framboise) is the one to introduce the second time around. If you like the Saison from Boulevard, try the Saison Dupont -- it's the same style with a nice blend of citrus and malt flavors in a 750ml bottle.
