The frozen food aisle is not immune to Christmas creep. Besides the annual appearance of peppermint ice cream, there are lots of holiday-flavored ice cream treats to sample.
To determine which of the other flavors should become holiday staples, Fat City has pitted Fat Boy Egg Nog Ice Cream Sandwiches against Edy's Pumpkin Frozen Dairy Dessert in a battle of the dishes.
Edy's Pumpkin Frozen Dairy Dessert
The limited edition
pumpkin offering has a lower concentration of milk fat, so it is
defined as a frozen dairy dessert instead of ice cream. The first three
ingredients are whey, skim milk and cream.
The color is closer to
a creamsicle or orange sherbet than bright orange, which is
comforting. It's creamy and easy to scoop into the bowl -- more Wendy's Frosty than Ben and Jerry's.
The
taste is mildly pumpkin and evokes the pumpkin pie on
the packaging. This should have been called pumpkin pie frozen dairy
dessert. Tiny flecks of cinnamon and nutmeg come
through quite clearly. It's like a lighter version of the Shatto pumpkin spice egg nog.
Fat Boy Egg Nog Ice Cream Sandwiches
Fat Boy Ice Cream Sandwiches are square bricks of the treat you might associate with school lunches. As soon as it's unwrapped, the eggnog version lets you know what you'll be tasting, releasing a distinctive aroma to prepare your tongue for the slightly sharp taste of egg nog.
The exterior is the classic ice cream sandwich -- a chewy cookie that eliminates the moisture in your mouth. After that, the filling is eggnog to the core. It's rich and heavy -- a great compliment to the light, sweet cookie. More importantly, the ratio of ice cream to cookie is a good one.
This battle probably just comes down to whichever flavor you like better: pumpkin or eggnog. For me, pumpkin wins. I wanted to eat a whole bowl by myself, while I needed to share the Fat Boy ice cream sandwich (it's a series of intense bites).
So start working these into the rotation. Either one would be a good change of pace to peppermint.

I liked the Sheridan's Pumpkin Pie concrete, but Ben and Jerry's Pumpkin Cheesecake was the winner!
Did you by any chance try Edy's Pumpkin ice cream last year when it was still ice cream? I tend to favor that one better than this year's frozen dairy dessert variety.
I need to find me some of that egg nog ice cream sandwich to try.
