Bring the champagne

It's the time of year when champagne makes everything better (except how you feel after a night of drinking champagne). But snagging the right bottle of bubbly or sparkling wine is a matter of balancing your budget and you desire for something sweet or dry.

The Wine Bar (13657 Washington) can help, with a champagne and sparkling wine tasting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The 25 vintages include a solid mix of domestic and imported offerings.

JP Gilmore of Vintegrity Wines and James Vigliaturo of Glazer's will be pouring the wines and talking about the bubbly offerings. The event costs $10 a person.

Red X (2401 West Platte Road, Riverside, Missouri) also has a wine tasting tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. The Riverside grocery store typically draws a big crowd for its free tastings, but there's usually a wide selection and a distributor on hand to talk about the wines.

While you're there, pick up a bottle of Domaine St. Michelle Brut for $7.99. It's on special this week, and that's a good price for a decent sparking wine. If you live further south, you can get the same bottle at Gomer's this week for $8.98.

Two wine tastings in one evening? We'll toast that.
