You should occasionally be rewarded for procrastination and the Wine, Spirits, Champagne and Craft Beer Extravaganza at Berbiglia will make you glad you waited to pick out a bottle to bring to Christmas.
Berbiglia Wine and Spirits (1114 West 103rd Street) has a free wine tasting tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. The wines available for tasting will range in price from $8 to $40, so you can decide what your boss or family deserves. If you make a reservation by calling 816-942-0070, a Riedel wine glass is yours for $5 (it's regularly $10.95).
For under $10, you're going to be fine with Yellow Tail Shiraz or Carbernet Merlot. Both feature berry flavors that go well with the kind of meat-based dishes you're likely to be having at Christmas. At the same end of the spectrum is the Bogle Old Vine 2007, released early this year. It's a zinfandel with a foundation in brambleberries and raspberry jam, which lends itself to some of the same sweet notes you'll taste in the Yellow Tail vintages.
Those who seek white wine might consider the Frei Brothers Reserve Chardonnay, which is meant to showcase flavors of green apple, orange zest and apple pie. It's a perfect compliment to barbecue and widely available for around $20. The 2008 Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc Viognier is another summer wine that you wouldn't mind drinking in winter. You'll taste some pear and melon notes in this blend developed by Pine Ridge.
If you're celebrating, consider the Barefoot Bubby Rose Cuvee -- a sparkling wine with a light, citrus finish. Pick up a baked brie from Costco and you've got a strong first course. For a few dollars more, the La Marca Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine with a slightly drier finish.
