Burgers are like new loves -- you wish that you had met them sooner, and the good attributes always outweigh the bad. Get ready for two new loves as Local Burger in Lawrence adds a couple of seasonal items to the menu.
The burger shop says its Roasted Vegetable Remolaude Burger is "perfectly roasted winter vegetables with a sauce that is sinfully good." The recommended protein of choice to go with those vegetables is either the red wattle pork or the veggie-burger patty. Between the roasted vegetables and the creamy remolaude, this promises to be a filling burger.
If you think vegetables on burgers are like fruit in beers, perhaps the Buckaroo Burger would be more your speed: homemade ranch dressing, uncured Beeler's bacon and fried onion rings -- all of which are gluten, egg and dairy free. Here, I'd opt for the beef, elk or buffalo patty.
In addition to the burgers, you can enjoy one of my favorite seasonal treats: peanut butter balls. From now until January 3, you get a free peanut butter ball with your order when you ask the cashier. Local Burger is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (Monday to Saturday) and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m (Sunday).
And while you're in Lawrence, you might as well make it a double and hit up Dempsey's Pub. It's a celebration of hamburgers with homemade pickles and a Kobe beef burger for $9. The toppings are always varied -- recently it was a Mexican Pork Burger served with mole roja and sweet pineapple salsa. Keep an eye on the fries as well. Lately, they've taken to serving poutine -- fries covered in gravy. Life is about balance and sometimes gravy fries are what we need to balance out roasted vegetables.
Happy burger hunting in Lawrence.
