Start saving your cans for the deposits, because a movement to buy the Pabst Brewing Company needs about $236 million to reach its goal.
Advertising agencies Forza Migliozzi and The Ad Store have teamed up on what they're terming a "crowdsourcing experiment." They're trying to raise $300 million in pledged donations to bring an offer to the Milwaukee brewer's current ownership.
The "Buy a Beer Company" Web site offers four levels of membership: bottle ($5), six pack ($25), case ($100) and brewmaster ($250,000). The site's Twitter feed suggested that $57.8 million had been pledged as of December 18. Although, considering you only need a name and e-mail address to make a pledge, that number should be taken with an entire carton of salt.
The news that Pabst was on the market came last month, with reports that Merrill Lynch had been retained to help find a suitor. In addition to Pabst, the new owner would also control the rights to several iconic American brands: Stroh's, Colt 45, Lone Star, Old Milwaukee and Schlitz. It's a veritable yard beer extravaganza.
Just in keep in mind, it never works out when average joes take over a brewer -- think about the fate that befell the McKenzie brothers in Strange Brew.
