Kettle's Fully Loaded Baked Potato Chips

Potato chip lovers are an odd bunch -- most stick to a single flavor and refuse to be convinced that salt and vinegar is, in fact, better than barbecue (it is, for the record).

But perhaps an uneasy peace can be reached via the latest Create-a-Chip Challenge winner from Kettle Brand Potato Chips: the Fully Loaded Baked Potato. Meant to mimic the steakhouse staple, it has sour cream, green onion, cheddar cheese and a smoky flavor "that's our vegetarian answer to fans' love of bacon."

The annual flavor contest from Kettle Foods has produced some of its most

memorable flavors -- the Spicy Thai potato chips are a wonderful blend

of salty and sweet, with the added bonus of a bit of heat at the end.

This year's addition has tastes that appeal to those who love sour cream and onion and those who swear by barbecue chips.

These are the kinds of chips that make you eat more in an attempt to figure out what you like about them. Ultimately, it's the cheddar cheese flavor that brings everything together -- a mellow note that means no flavor is too dominant. If you like the toppings more than the baked potato, then this is the chip for you.

The Salem, Oregon-based company is similar in its philosophy to The Roasterie -- it uses all natural products and has a healthy obsession with producing high-quality variations of one thing -- just substitute potato chips for coffee and you get the idea. Similar to the My Blend Web site, Kettle Foods has an extensive Flavor survey designed to ferret out your favorite flavor.

And with the Fully Loaded chips, Kettle is moving the United States closer to having "everything potato chips" (typically known as all-dressed in Canada) -- the Fully Loadeds just lack something sweet to balance out the smoky flavor. But this represents a big first step towards trying to bring people outside of their potato chip comfort zone. And with dill pickle and ketchup-flavored chips both becoming more widely available, we may one day realize the snack-food heights that currently exist across our Northern border.

I think Cape Cod kettle chips are much better= yum- sweet mesquite bbq and sea salt & vinegar- pow!

I think the Kettle brand Buffalo Wing chips probably contain crack somewhere in the ingredients list.

I don't know about any flavor contest, but I bought a couple of their baked potato chips (as in lower in fat and cals, not flavored like a baked potato) yesterday at Whole Foods - they were 2 for $4 - and we LOVED them. It was hard to stop eating them. But even at 3 grams of fat per serving, we had to draw the line somewhere! I liked the lightly salted ones I got, and my husband really enjoyed the salt and black pepper flavor he got. Highly recommended!

I loved the Spicy Thai chips' flavor. I just think the Kettle brand is too friggin' thick and crunchy for me.
