A little bit of warmth blows into town tomorrow night with a Lagunitas Beer Tasting at Barley's Brewhaus in Shawnee.
Beginning at 7 p.m., the brewhaus will be featuring four beers from the craft brewery based out of Petaluma, California. The tasting starts with the Dog Town Pale Ale. After that, it's the India Pale Ale (paired with salmon mousse on a croustini), Hop Stoopid Ale (hops and malt lovers will be attracted to his one -- it's paired with beef sashimi), and Brown Shuggar (paired with bread pudding).
The four-course tasting is $10 for mug club members, $15 for non-members.
Then, on January 25, Barley's holds the next installment
of its Beer School. The guest lecturer is Carissa Sweigart from the Boston Beer Company. Tickets are $9 and you have to call 913-663-4099 to reserve them.
In addition to doing a decent Southie accent, I have probably consumed as
much Sam Adams in my life as anything else and I can tell you that
you'll probably enjoy what they're dishing out. The Boston Beer Company's seasonal beers are a good way to make an impression if you
need a gift, and the Winter Lager is still one of my favorites.
At the other end of the spectrum is the Pride Wine Dinner on Wednesday, January 27, at Michael Smith. Smith pairs seven wines from the Pride Mountain Vineyards with five courses and a round of passed appetizers. The menu is as decadent as one might expect: campo lindo farms chicken and black truffle (celery root puree, roasted chicken pan sauce, potato chip), roasted veal prime rib and polenta, sauteed sweetbreads, cabbe and black currents, braised veal osso bucco and potato gnocci, and bacon wrapped KC strip loin with matsutake mushrooms and dried fig sauce.
Hors d'oeuvres are at 6:30 p.m., the dinner begins at 7 p.m. The cost is $195 per person with tax and gratuity included.
