Battle of the dishes: Fluffy Fresh versus Dunkin' Donuts

If you want to impress a donut eater, your glazed donut better be the best thing in the shop. An original sugar glaze can't hide consistency or balance issues -- instead, it tends to highlight exactly what's out of whack.

So Fat City scooped up some original glazed from Fluffy Fresh Donuts (10123 State Line) and the new Dunkin' Donuts (7722 West 151st Street, Overland Park) to find out which is churning out the superior product.

These aren't massive donuts. They measured 3 3/8 inches wide by 4 1/2 inches wide, making them more oval than circular.

The first bite yielded a big, bright taste of sugary glaze that quickly dissolved in the mouth. It was relatively dense for a glazed donut -- dense, but not heavy.

The donut itself was chewy and had the right give. Although these donuts had been made earlier in the day, they didn't taste as if they had been sitting in a case for too long. Overall, it was the right balance of glaze to donut -- the kind that makes you want to immediately eat a second one.

The chain recently returned to the Kansas City. Fat City's tester ate these donuts while still strapped into the driver's seat, as drive-thru donuts should be eaten.

At 3 1/2 perfectly round inches, these donuts were made by a machine or the most skilled baker in Overland Park. This light, fluffy donut was more about the pastry than the sugar coating.

It was not cloyingly sweet, but instead had a mild yeasty flavor. The consistency was that of a potato roll or traditional dining roll. At the end of the day, this was not a decadent donut. It was clearly designed to be eaten with coffee -- because on its own, it was merely perfectly acceptable.

The winner -- hands down -- was Fluffy Fresh. It set up a glaze yardstick that all other donuts in the city should be measured against.

If you don't include LaMar's then it ain't a proper donut taste test, dammit. I can't imagine eating at a place called Fluffy Fresh. Sounds like a mix between a pet store and a laundromat, FFS...
