Simply Breakfast opens in Westport

It's the classic tale of boy meets girl meets breakfast.

Jermaine and Kellyn Hunt have shared a love of the morning meal since they met at the University of Arkansas. And after having family shuttle in and out for their Kansas City wedding in July 2009, they realized one thing was missing from their new life in the city of fountains.

"To put it lightly, we're big lovers of breakfast. And since we couldn't find a place that offers quick, casual breakfast, we decided to try it out for ourselves," says Kellyn.

A honeymoon during hurricane season in Cancun gave them plenty of time to plan and when they got back, they immediately thought of Westport as a location for their restaurant: Simply Breakfast.

"We fell in love with Westport because of its culture and the morale about supporting and buying local," says Hunt.

The breakfast spot opened at midnight on New Year's Eve, and will be open from Tuesday to Friday (6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and

Saturday and Sunday (6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. until the temperature rises 1 a.m. to 1 p.m.) to appeal to

morning commuters and night owls.

"Breakfast is a really satisfying meal whether it's after a night out or the next morning," says Kellyn Hunt.

They cleaned and repainted a vacant space at 4120 Pennsylvania Avenue, Suite 9, near Murray's Ice Cream, and put together a menu that reflects their belief that breakfast is best when it is straightforward and home-cooked.

Hunt pointed to the Biscuits and Gravy Platter ($6.49 for "two fistfuls" of biscuits and gravy, two eggs, hash browns or toast and a 12-ounce soda or coffee) and the Breakfast burrito ($7.99, two eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, green onions,

green peppers, hash browns and cheese in a flour tortilla).

"We wanted to make sure you got a lot of food for your money. Most people can only eat half and bring the rest home for later," says Hunt.

There's also oatmeal ($3.49, brown sugar, milk and fresh fruit), a build-your-own omelet ($6.49, three eggs, up to five toppings) and a pancake platter ($6.49, two pancakes, bacon, hash browns or toast and a 12-ounce soda/coffee).

"The pancakes are sweet cream, which means they smell like yellow cake and have just the right hint of sweetness," says Hunt.

Simply Breakfast serves Broadway Cafe coffee, juice (apple and orange), and hot chocolate.

Winter weather slowed traffic since the store opened, which Hunt says was a blessing in disguise.

"It's helped us concentrate on quality and mastering our system to get people used to the idea of breakfast without waitresses," says Hunt.

You order from the counter right inside the door before entering the dining room on the right. With snow piling up and temperatures plummeting, the Hunts have taken a cue from some of the bars in Westport and are waiting until the weather warms to roll out their late-night breakfast. In the spring, Simply Breakfast will be open from 1 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

"We decided on winter hours. We won't open late night until after it's 40 degrees out," says Hunt.

They also hope to add free wi-fi and begin catering in the Plaza and Westport area. "My husband works in corporate America and he's done with donuts and bagels," says Hunt.

We've been to Simply Breakfast three times since their opening and will continue to be regulars. The food is fantastic, the service is great, and the concept itself is unmatched.
