For those of you still stuck on Valentine's Day, that is so next month.

It's time for Easter, people. And that means a whole host of new chocolate candies. At the forefront is Peeps' chocolate-covered marshmallows, a departure from the exclusively marshmallow cutouts made by Just Born

I'll admit that I was hesitant to open the plastic packaging because of the chick-shaped chocolate blob on the front. Featureless chocolate figures tend to be amorphous in taste as well.

The chicks are available in dark and milk-chocolate, and look like a slightly blobbier version of the art on the package. They are soft to the bite and have the same consistency as marshmallow hearts or eggs from Russell Stover.

The two biggest surprises are that the interior marshmallow is yellow -- which is sligthly disconcerting to discover after taking a bite -- and one of the ingredients is chocolate liquor. This gives the candy the slight taste of a cordial.

The marshmallow component is similar to Peeps in that it's not overly marshmallow in flavor. It's more sweet or sugar-y than marshmallow-y. This means that chocolate is the dominant flavor and the balance is off between the filling and coating.

And while you'll be happier with the dark chocolate version, neither is a home run. This is a case where you feel like Just Born would have been better served by cranking out a new version of marshmallow cut-outs rather than trying to improve upon a crowded category of Easter candy.
