I understand that Miami has beaches and a nightlife we might not be able to touch here in Kansas City. But our wheat beer is better than theirs.
Our sister blog at the Miami New Times has a drink recipe for a wheat and mint drink -- a mojito of sorts, where the rum has been replaced with a wheat beer -- in what is destined to be the beginning of one of this year's likely trends: beer cocktails.
With this year's craft and small-batch releases of sweet ales and smoky stouts, we seem poised to take a great step forward in mixing our beer to form something more complex, like the mixologist or ice cream seller who should be credited with the spiked milkshake.
The Wheat and Mint cocktail also scores points for using items you likely have on hand in your home bar (gin, lime juice, simple syrup, orange slice, wheat beer). You'll probably only need to buy fresh mint and orange bitters. Here's a comprehensive overview of orange bitters, but if you start with Angostura Orange Bitters, you'll be fine.
So although we might not be sipping from a glass on a beach or by the pool or even at Miami's Club 50 which is credited with the cocktail's creation, it's the kind of drink that can help you escape our snowy reality.
