The Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition scored a coup last week, announcing that Missouri state Rep. Beth Low will be the year-old organization's first director.
"We are thrilled to have someone as skilled and committed as Beth Low to move us forward as we make improvements to policies that affect the food we eat," said Gretchen Kunkel, president of KC Healthy Kids, which helped launch the GKFPC last year.
Low, who represents the 39th District, is not running for re-election in 2010, even though she wouldn't be termed out until 2012. She instead opted to head the advocacy organization that promotes local and sustainable food practices.
"Every community has a food system, whether we are aware of it or not," said Low. "We need to look carefully at how our local policy decisions are directly or indirectly affecting the quality and access to food for all members of our community."
Low is currently a co-sponsor of three bills in the Missouri House: HCR 19, which encourages state agencies to develop guidelines on light pollution; HB 1843, a bill to allow students to lock in tuition rates at public universities; and HB 1850, which would change the way discrimination claims are filed with the Missouri Commission on Human Rights to prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation. Low was elected to the House in 2004 and serves on the Special Committee on Family Services.
In her new job, she'll look to help connect Kansas City consumers and producers all along the food chain as part of a regional promotional effort designed to help people make healthier choices about what they eat. And having a dedicated director with connections in Jefferson City can only help fuel the burgeoning locavore movement. Either way, Low is still focused on her constituents.
"I can think of few issues that have such an impact on the short- and long-term health of every single person in our community," said Low. "If you eat, you have a stake in our local food system."

You must be kidding me. You don't even live in this country. Please limit your lobbying to those for whom you may vote.
