Dunkin' Donuts took one step closer to downtown -- downtown Overland Park that is -- by starting construction on a store at 7446 Metcalf.

Expected to open in May, the donut shop will be located on the former site of a BP Gas Station at the busy intersection at 75th and Metcalf. The pad around the site was mostly dirt yesterday afternoon as an earthmover sat waiting as if it were already in line at the drive-thru. The corner location shouldn't be quiet for long; as the hours are going to be from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

It's the second Overland Park shop for developer Verona Key LLC, which

has stated plans to open at least 15 Dunkin' Donuts in the greater

Kansas City area. The first store opened in November at 7722 W. 151st

Street.

"This town is a hard-working, hard-driving town and one that obviously needs a lot of good Dunkin' Donuts coffee to keep them running!" said Jennifer Benjamin, Verona Key President, in a release about the new location.

Dunkin' Donuts needs to fill 30 positions in the next several months, if you're interested in applying, go here. If working a nine-hour shift sounds too arduous, you could always try to invent the chain's next donut: That contest comes with a grand prize of $12,000.

I'm all for donuts, but why would you pass up Sheridan's to drive thru Dunkin? Dunkin' does drop a passable cup of Joe and the only coffee in the neighborhood is at the Jesus and Java joint up the street. I like my caffeine free of religious zeal as well. Ah hell, just give me a double choco cake w/ my Joe. From what I hear, Space Age sells out pretty quick and I don't get up for donuts in the morning anyway.

Sheeit...I've been wanting to put a coffee place in that spot for a while, and was just waiting to build up a little capital. Damned Dunkin' Donuts...

But what a handy spot! Now I can swing through and pick up a coffee and a donut when I'm done with my workouts once I get back on the early morning routine. Sweet!

If you want a REAL donut, drive a couple blocks up to 80th and Metcalf to JOHN'S SPACE AGE DONUTS. That's a real donut made by hand every morning by the same guy for over 40 years.
