4. Messy's Birds and Brews. This carry-out wing joint opened last September in Midtown with a huge range of flavors -- creamy chipotle, garlic parmesan, spicy Asian, teriyaki, Jamaican jerk, sweet and sour, barbecue and buffalo styles. It's one of the city's few spots dedicated solely to wings; the homemade sauces are made from scratch and the wings are fried to order in about 10 minutes.
3. Thai Place. Chicken wings here are slathered in a spicy garlic basil sauce that will leave your mouth tingling but make you want to keep eating them. Get a Thai Iced Coffee or Bubble Tea to counteract the heat.
2. Niecie's Restaurant. The fried chicken at the restaurant on Troost is salty and hot, and most definitely meant to be eaten with your hands. Their wings are large, tender and crispy -- go ahead and pour on maple syrup. You earned it.
1. The Peanut. The wing standard in Kansas City. These are monsters -- finishing a half-order, let alone a full order, can be a challenge because you're eating both the wing and drumstick. They're spicy and peppery and the right amount of messy. These are what people miss when they move away from KC.

I want the recipe for The Peanut's blue cheese dressing!!

peanut wings are pretty legit also, but thai place has a craving to the wings with an ice tea!
messy wings are amazing, the jalapeno poppers are great also!
i always get the creamy chipotle, service is off but who cares when you have great wings!
Messy's wings are on the rise. The BBQ and Creamy Chipolte are awsome. the try the creamy chipolte!
I've never even heard of Challenger's. Doubt I will ever drive way the hell out to Johnson Cty to try any of that suburban crap anyway.
The Peanut's wings are the best that I've had in KC.
It looks like the wings at Challenger's are named after the "High Profile" illiterate Chuck Tabor.
Chucky Ts Nutty Wings
Six Pack $8.49 Twelve Pack $14.99
These wings are huge, and available in your choice of hot or super hot.
Tower Tavern for buffalo wings! Also try the super hot, (black peppery) smoked wings at Winslow's, City Market.
Go try the double dipped wings at Johnny's in PV. They are hands down the best I've had in KC.
I notice the Challengers website has a dress code. Do I really need to eat someplace that feels they have to remind its patrons to pull up their pants, put on something besides a tank top, or leave their grill back at the crib? Typically, good food and civilized behavior, dress etc. coexist and don't require a nanny-like reminder.
@ chuck tabor
Chuck, you are a stupid motherfucker. It's one thing to say that Peanut wings are not to your preference, but it's something else entirely to claim that another place, let alone some OP shithole, has better wings. You probably have too many dicks in your mouth to know what great wings taste like. You and the "high profile people around the county" can eat my asshole. I promise that the taste of my shit, which might contain the digested residue of some Peanut wings, will taste better than Challenger's wings.
Good day, sir.
Man, I thought Willie's wings were terrible...
Fred P. Ott's wings are solid as can as be for $.35 on Sun. & Wed.
Gonna have to check out Messy's - I didn't even know about it!
The idea that someone could make a better traditional, buffalo-style wing than The Peanut is, frankly, laughable. First, they are deep fried long enough to make the skin the right amount of crispy. That is a major failing in the vast majority of lesser wings (including those from the Anchor Bar in Buffalo). Unless it takes the kitchen a good 15 to 20 minutes to get a batch out, I'd be suspicious. Second, the sauce has the right amount of heat for most people. I'd normally like it a bit hotter, but if I'm sharing a dozen with my wife it works out perfectly for both of us. Plus, their blue cheese dressing is especially good. Though, I suppose it MAY be possible to make a better dressing; I just haven't come across one. I unfortunately have to leave KC for good this summer (after spending the last 4 years here), and Peanut wings and Christopher Elbow chocolates are the only things I will truly miss.
Chuck couldn't be saying that because he owns Challenger's and is a former owner/manager of one of the Peanut operations, could he? :)
I'm a big fan of the wings at Tower Tavern. Order them "finished on the grill" so they get a bit of char. Delicious!
i cant believe this challengers are by far the best. they have been wriiten about nationaly and 100 dozens by the day. they are requested by several high profile people around the country check them out and the home made dressing blow the peanut away ill bet my paycheck on it
