According to the American Pie Council, there's a legend that the first cherry pie was created by the Virgin Queen herself, Elizabeth I. In the United States, cherry pies are the second most popular fruit pies after apple pies. That's certainly the case at Overland Park-based Golden Boy Pies.

"We sell the hell out of cherry pies," says the company's Connie Campbell. "They're the second top-selling fruit pie after apple pies." Most of the city's small diners, including the Town Topics, sell Golden Boy pies by the slice (this month's featured pie from Golden Boy is Black Forest Cream Pie: a chocolate cream pie smothered with cherry pie filling and topped with either meringue or whipped cream).

This week, Cosentino's Price Chopper stores are selling a full-sized Tippin's brand cherry pie for $3.99 with a Chopper Shopper card (they're regularly $7.99). Another great place to find a cherry pie: the Hawthorne House Pie Room in Parkville, which is only open Thursdays through Saturdays.
