Closed Restaurant List: February 2010

Rob Dalzell in happier days

The big news last month was that talented, ambitious chef Rob Dalzell had closed his flagship restaurant 1924 Main as well as his popular hot soup restaurant, Souperman. Dalzell had already turned Chefburger over to new owners and had even earlier shuttered his Yummo frozen yogurt shop. As we reported last week, the gourmet pizza boite Pizza Bella was still open, even though its own Web site was reporting it "temporarily closed."

But there were other closings, too. Was anyone in Fat City really surprised that the Iron Horse: An American Bistro pulled out of Parkville (in a location where so many restaurants have failed that it's fair to say it's cursed)? When I reviewed this restaurant in The Pitch last October, I noted that on both visits, no one else was in the restaurant.

I also reported -- with no tears shed -- that the Corner Restaurant in Westport, which would have turned 30 last month, celebrated the anniversary by closing instead.

The neighborhood joint that closed bore no resemblance to the popular

Westport gathering place of the 1980s -- but, as Alan Scherstuhl

highlighted on The Pitch Plog last week, what in Westport still does?

Two of restaurateur Ann Liberda's Thai Place restaurants closed at

the beginning of 2010: The Northland location and the Arun Thai Place

in the old Western Union Building at 100 East 7th Street.

The one bright spot in all this sadness? We received an e-mail from a reader telling us that the popular Independence diner Little Richard's Family Restaurant

on 291 Highway had closed -- but that rumor was, thank goodness, false.

I spoke with veteran waitress Connie this morning who said, "We're up

and running full force, honey."

Whimper. I will miss Souperman greatly. I work at the Star and loved having its fantastic soups (West African Peanut Chicken, oh my) and nummy sanditos (hummus was great) within a short walk. Sniffle.

Now I won't bother watching Check, Please! to see if I showed up in the B-roll that was being shot there in January.
