I'll just have one. It's only 50 cents. What's the harm in eating a roll on the way home from the grocery store? That's what I told myself last month when I tried my first Farm To Market pretzel roll from Cosentino's Market.
And so began my downward spiral. The pretzel roll is about the size of a dinner roll, with the chewy exterior of a well-done pizza and the yeasty, salty interior of a soft-baked pretzel. It's a high-end version of a great street vendor pretzel and the closest I've experienced to the common pretzel bread found in German bakeries. This is carbohydrate heaven, but I don't want to run a marathon -- I just want more energy to consume more pretzel rolls.
It turned out that the pretzel roll is a gateway roll. It wasn't long before I moved on to other Farm To Market stuff that was harder on my wallet. The $2.69 baguette led to the $3.69 sourdough, and before I knew it I was dropping $4.99 a loaf on the French Farm bread.
Farm To Market has me hooked and now I walk out of the store sometimes with a loaf under each arm while chewing on a pretzel roll. Children stare at me wide-eyed. I go several days without shaving and occasionally wear sweatshirts in public. If asked, I'll swear these things are all connected.
So just a word of caution: Give the pretzel rolls a wide berth. Because once you sink your teeth into one, you'll be consumed with thoughts of cheese sandwiches and a hot pretzel at a baseball game. Farm To Market soda bread comes out on March 5. It's a limited release for St. Patrick's Day, only available until March 17. God help us all.
