Trezo Mare: Now serving an excellent Sunday brunch

By Kansas City brunch standards, the $14 Sunday brunch served at Trezo Mare Restaurant & Lounge, in the Briarcliff Village Shopping Center, is an excellent deal. After all, the elegant Sunday brunch at Benton's Steak & Chop House at Westin Crown Center costs $32 per adult.

The Sunday brunch at Trezo Mare, which began two weeks ago, might not have the dramatic view or the sumptuous array of fare that Benton's offers, but it's a truly satisfying and well-done affair with a menu of interesting dishes -- including chicken and waffles, biscuits and gravy, a cheesy croque monsieur sandwich, a crab cake benedict (there's also the traditional version with seared pit ham steak), chorizo chilaquiles, made-to-order eggs and a burger.

By ordering one of the brunch dishes, patrons are entitled to load up a plate (or two) at the buffet in the center of the dining room, which included sliced Italian meats (salami, cappacola ham), various cheese, a leafy green salad with an excellent garlic-dill ranch dressing, pasta salad, various breakfast pastries and muffins and an assortment of desserts including, of course, little squares of tiramisu. But very good tiramisu!

It needed...something
It's easy to get greedy at these all-you-can-devour affairs, but my group was pretty well-behaved for a change. One friend liked his shrimp-and-avocado omelet (pictured at right), but felt it "needed something" to give the egg dish a little oomph. He asked the server for a little Hollandaise sauce, and the waiter was back in the blink of an eye. For that kind of attentive service, 14 bucks is an absolute bargain.
