The burger hierarchy is well established. On one end you have gourmet burgers (Blanc, BRGR); in the center are fast casual restaurants (Red Robin, Steak 'n Shake); then there's fast food.
But when Wendy's recently introduced the Bacon and Blue Burger ($4.29, $5.99 as part of a small combo), the burger scale was seemingly thrown into chaos. Applewood-smoked bacon and a handful of blue cheese don't seem like they should be options at the drive-thru. But they're among the ingredients atop this 1/4 pound beef patty, along with sauteed yellow onions and creamy steakhouse sauce, on a split-top bun.
This is about affordable luxury, a foil-wrapped 680 calories and 40 grams of fat (now it makes sense why this burger is on a fast-food menu).
What blue me away
There was an enormous mound of warm, melty blue cheese -- close to the size of a silver dollar pancake -- in the center. I'm a fan of the stinky stuff, so for me this made the burger.
Where they blue it
The bacon -- while plentiful with four thick slices -- was soft and more peppery than applewood-smoked. I was hoping for smoked flavor and was thrown off by the dominating taste of pepper.

It was alright, I didn't think the blue cheese had enough bite to it, but it was good for fast food. I prefer Maytag blue cheese, which has a hell of a bite and can be found at 810 Zone or Dempsey's in Lawrence

Yeah, but these totals are downright waifish compared to what you'd consume at Red Robin or Blanc.
I had the burger a few weeks ago; definitely one of the better sandwiches I've had at a fast food chain.
