Since the Tennessee-based Little Debbie brand was first introduced by McKee Foods in 1960, the beaming little face with the mop of wavy hair and the straw bonnet has been the signature image of the company's products, including Swiss Rolls, Nutty Bars and cellophane-wrapped sugary frosted cakes. The company's founder, O.D. McKee, decided to name his line of snack cakes after his four-year-old granddaughter Debbie and handed a black-and-white snapshot of the child to an Atlanta artist who created the original image.
As part of McKee Foods' 50th anniversary celebration, Debbie McKee-Fowler, now an executive vice-president with the family business, will participate in a real-time chat from 6-7 p.m. CST on the Little Debbie Facebook page (which already has more than half a million fans) or on Twitter.
Since Little Debbie has been parodied twice on episodes of The Simpsons, she's a cultural icon, no question about it.
