Chips are bad for you -- but Sun Chips, well they're just made of good stuff. The snack-food industry's rebranding continues with Frito Lays' introduction of a chip bag made from compostable material.

Also: Frito Lay is using solar energy at one of its

plants. However, it's only being used for the 10 1/2 ounce size of Sun

Chips, and that still leaves seven plants that are likely powered by

fossil fuels.

But back to the compostable bag. It's admirable, even if the Sun Chips Web site warns that the new bag is spooooky: .

"Truth be told, our new bag sounds a bit different than our previous bags. That's because plant-based materials have different sound properties than the materials used to create our old bags. So although this version is a little bit louder, we hope you'll appreciate the change and the positive environmental impact it will have."

It's a weird aspect to highlight, because I just don't see how the crinkle of a bag matters more than the crinkle of chips. It's if someone's done some market research and concluded that people want to help the environment but not if it means that they can't sneak a bag of chips into a movie theater.

I find myself struggling to be impressed with this innovation. I have

the same reaction to it as a list of what I can do with my empty potato chip bags. And we haven't even had the discussion about whether a corn-based chip could even be considered sustainable.

What's inside the bag hasn't changed -- which means

that Sun Chips will be what I reach for only when the Cheetos are gone.

But at least my compost pile will be eating well from now on.

Jonathan, thanks for highlighting our new SunChips compostable bag! Our bags are sustainable even if they arent composted - even if consumers dont compost the new SunChips packaging, were still using renewable, plant based materials instead of petroleum-based materials that we anticipate will help reduce greenhouse gases that result from using a petroleum based package.

They mentioned that aspect because the crinkle is very loud with the new bag. It does sound different from a regular chip bag.
