Bice Bistro has closed in the Power & Light District.
"Bice has closed many of its restaurants throughout
the country over the past two years and unfortunately had to close its doors here
in February," says Nick Benjamin, executive director of the Power & Light District. "We are working through a number of different options to
replace them and expect to have the space reopened imminently."
With the entertainment district still mulling a number of different possibilities for the site, Benjamin wouldn't say specifically what type of concept would fill the former Bice, only that discussions with both local and national entities were under way.
The Bice Bistro was part of Bice Restaurant Group, the holding company owned by the Ruggeri family. Founded in 1926, the company has more than 40 restaurants worldwide.
The Bice Bistro opened in 2008. Despite a well-appointed dining room and patio, the food didn't earn rave reviews. In April 2009, Power & Light parent the Cordish Co. sued Bice Restaurant Group claiming a breach of the lease terms and that Bice owed missed rent payments and upaid construction costs. Cordish dropped the suit two weeks later.
Benjamin hopes to announce a new tenant for the 6,000-square-foot restaurant at the corner of 14th and Main in the coming weeks. Let's hope so. The space boasted one of the nicest patios in Kansas City and was one of the best-kept secrets in the Power & Light -- maybe just a little too well kept.

How about a somthing with local bbq, blues? How about a bar called "yard beer" where someone can actually afford to drink. Can't wait until this thing called p&l craters, and the local places can invite themselves in during the bankrupcy auction.. Chain's are absolutely the last thing we should be inviting in. Oh...local music 7 nights a week would be nice also. Bet there are 100 local bands that would jump at the chance...hey how about a place called "local band"?????
Hey here's an idea - how about a freaking local Kansas City establishment instead of yet another crappy chain?
I ate at Bice in Chicago; it is in my favorite hotel, The Talbot. I ate once, and was underwhelmed. High prices, mediocre food. Never went to the KC location because of my experience in Chicago. It amazes me that blah chains can continue to grow despite their pretty uninspired food. It doesn't surprise me that they always collapse within a few years. I suspect a few more places in the P&L will close shortly.
