On Sunday, I ate my way through Kauffman Stadium and saw a baseball
game. And if you've ever wondered what would happen if hot dogs and hot wings were somehow genetically engineered together, I give you the Royal Bacon Blue Dog.
In essence, it's the hot wing dog. This dog is a sharp splash of blue cheese sauce and crumbles with crunchy pieces of bacon and raw red onion that will clear your sinuses. Under all of that is a hot dog, somewhere.
Like a loaded baked potato, the Royal Bacon Blue Dog requires some careful eating -- otherwise you'll end up with a bite of toppings and then a bite of dog. In any case, this is a leaner, meant to be eaten while you're standing up with the hot dog held out in front of you. Otherwise, you'll be wearing it in your seat.
If you like blue cheese, you'll be in heaven because they're not stingy. I was just excited to see something different at the K -- although the blue cheese wanted to fight the nachos and cheese fries in my stomach. Perhaps real cheese is not meant to go toe-to-toe with cheese sauce.
When I asked the cashier which of the eight specialty dogs were the hottest sellers, she said the Bacon Blue was popular and the Chicago Style Dog (celery salt, yellow mustard, neon relish, diced onions,
sport peppers, tomato wedges and pickle spears on a poppy seed bun). Her recommendation was the Texas Dog (chili, shredded cheddar cheese, diced onion and Fritos corn chip bits).
Although tracking down and eating a hot dog from the Dugout Dog House (there are two stands, one by each foul pole) was fairly simple, a Royal iced coffee remained elusive. Iced coffee is one of the options in the ads on flat-screen televisions around the stadium, which show a slightly milky cup of coffee with perfect beads of condensation on the outside. It looks good in hi-def, but it remains my white whale at Kauffman.
Some concession workers say that it's never existed and they don't know why it's on the menu board. Others simply say they are out of coffee. I've asked the folks at Aramark for an answer on that, as well as if the made-to-order mini doughnut stand that debuted last year has disappeared as well.
