Parisi's Royal Blue Blend needs to sit for 12 hours in a French Press.
I've heard tales of the Royal Blue Iced Coffee at Kauffman Stadium, but had yet to locate a cup for myself. Then I received a small package in the mail last week that changed everything.
Parisi Artisan Coffee sent me a sample of its Royal Blue Blend, which was introduced in 2009 and became the official coffee of the Kansas City Royals this season.
"It has a big body with notes of citrus and a sweet, savory flavor,"
said Scott Presnell, Parisi's director of marketing.
I followed the detailed instructions for grounds-to-water ratio, steeped it in a French Press for 12 hours, and then poured myself a glass over crushed ice. But I substituted in milk for creamer (after a few sips of the coffee black) and avoided flavoring/simple syrup.
This is easily the best ballpark coffee I've ever had -- dark, rounded
and smooth. But then, it's the only one I've ever made in my own
kitchen.

A glass of Royal Blue iced coffee calls for crushed ice, cream, sugar, and coffee.
While the flavor was robust, I didn't get the sweetness that Presnell suggested. But the dark roast smell of the grounds was still the dominant note after 12 hours, when I was sipping an ice coffee on my back porch and listening to the Royals on the radio.
The beans are Arabica beans from Costa Rica imported to Kansas City from
Cafetin de St. Martin micro mill run by former Kansas Citian Tim O'Brien. The coffee (hot and iced) is available at concession stands and in restaurants inside Kauffman Stadium. It will also be sold during the baseball season 12 oz. bags (regular and decaffeinated) at Hy-Vee stores.
I'll be looking to buy a cup the next time I'm at Kauffman; it's worth the effort of tracking down a concession stand that sells it.
