on Saturday and Sunday (and again next weekend) in
Leavenworth. This is your chance to experience all things Kansas, not
just food. But while you're there, you might as well learn about Kansas
wineries and microbreweries. Admission is $5.
Whether you're a fan of the ponies or just mint juleps, you've got plenty of Derby Day options on Saturday. The Tower Tavern in Martini Corner (with a newly opened deck addition) hosts a Derby Day Party from 2 to 7 p.m., with gerbil races -- yes, that says gerbil races -- and signature drinks and appetizers. Tickets are $20; the event is a fundraiser for the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired. Maker's Mark Bourbon & Lounge has its second annual Kansas City Derby Test in the Power & Light District from 2 to 6 p.m. You can meet local racehorses -- including Seabiscuit's grandson -- while enjoying lunch and cocktails. Tickets are $35-$70.
Carnival comes to the patio outside Em Chamas Brazilian Grill
on Saturday night, with a live samba band, dancing from 8 to
midnight and drink specials, including caipirinhas, at the outdoor
bar for a $5 cover.
The party doesn't need to end on Saturday. Flying Saucer
hosts a second anniversary party on Sunday, May 2. Kansas and Missouri
beers will be $2.75 per pint, and the pub in the Power & Light
District has promised to tap a new beer every hour on the hour between
noon and 10 p.m.
