With the bourbon-fueled celebration of the Kentucky Derby behind us, it's time to start setting our sights on the tequila-est holiday, Cinco de Mayo.
The natural drink extension of tequila is the margarita, and depending on the temperature on Wednesday, you can go either frozen or on the rocks.
It's hardest for me to resist citrus-flavored margaritas. A grapefruit margarita has the right mix of tart and sweet, while a smoky grilled grapefruit margarita is the kind of cocktail that could generate cocktail conversation all on its own. Those looking for something a bit sweeter could opt for a peach margarita -- a blended concoction of ice, peaches, and tequila.
Margaritas have evolved -- or regressed, depending on whether you're a purist -- to feature almost every fruit flavor from pomegranate to guava jalapeno. Perhaps not a shocking turn of events for a drink that can often be found in a frozen slushee machine or novelty home blender.
The Fifth Crown is an intriguing cocktail: Combining Mexican beer and tequila, with Creme de Mure and lime juice providing a taste bridge between the two. This one falls into the same high-risk, high-reward category as spiked milkshakes.
For those who have a rocky relationship with tequila, there are obviously a few other choices. The Luchador is a spicy beer cocktail -- almost a cousin to the Bloody Mary -- named for the famed Mexican wrestlers. It's got Clamato, hot sauce and pepper, so it's an eye opener.
And any all-ages celebration should include a Mexican Coca-Cola -- which is sweetened with sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. It comes in glass bottles, perfect for clinking together.

Nope...only margarita for me.......on the rocks with salt....yum, yum, yum. My husband still makes fun of me, when after drinking more than I can count at Annies Santa Fe (for those who remember it on the Plaza), knocked my silverware on the floor and accused the waiter of stealing it...geez, those were the days....
