Cupcakes meet cake donuts courtesy of Lamar's Donuts this month. The local shop unveiled the red velvet donut on Saturday.
There's no cream cheese frosting or extraneous flavors -- this is just a shockingly red donut with a light glaze. The glaze is clear, making the red donut easy to see in the case next to the long johns and crullers.
By Sunday at 9 a.m., the Lamar's in Mission (5901 Johnson Drive) was long sold out of the red velvet donuts, but the location at 3395 Main Street had a dozen left.
The conut's brilliant color made me worry that I might find it too rich or crumbly -- which are my standard complaints about red velvet cake. But biting into the donut was like eating a regular cake donut from Lamar's. The glaze provided most of the sweetness and, by the second bite, the dense cake had me reaching for coffee.
While perhaps slightly sweeter than the original, it was definitely more red donut than red velvet cake. But this donut's batch had been made fresh that morning, so it was firm on the outside and nicely chewy on the inside. The Red Velvet Donut is available from now until May 31.
If you're a mom, stop by Lamar's on Mother's Day (Sunday, May 9) and you'll get a free donut of any flavor you want.
