Pretzel M&Ms are simply genius

Despite an endless array of brand extensions and flavor additions, the candy aisle hasn't provided a serious new contender for gut-busting, office-sneaking pleasure since the Milky Way Midnight (itself just a reboot of the Milky Way Dark) in 2000.

Consider the drought over. Pretzel M&Ms are so good, I thought about building a fan site for the first time ever.

Mars had effectively destroyed my expectations with a discordant mix of new M&Ms the past several years. (Remember the sandwich-in-a-candy-shell issue with Strawberried Peanut Butter M&Ms?)

But the person behind Pretzel M&Ms deserves a spot next to the folks who first thought to put peanuts inside the candy. Salty and sweet meet harmoniously, because M&Ms have been adapted to properly meld with a tiny pretzel nugget.

Pretzel M&Ms are basically the size of Peanut M&Ms but slightly rounder in shape -- which means they tumble out of the bag faster into your palm.

In the spherical M&Ms, a pretzel nugget is encased in a light chocolate coating.

The pretzel taste comes through right after I bite into the hard outer shell. It's salty and crunchy, and then I get to the thin layer of sweet chocolate at the back end of the bite. The pretzel is the star of the candy.

Mars seems to have taken a cue from traditional chocolate-covered pretzels, where the pretzel is allowed to be the dominant flavor with an accent of chocolate. When I lived in Boston's North End, my guilty pleasure was not cannolis or gelato, but a cheap pretzel rod with one half dipped in caramel and milk chocolate. This approximates that blissful mix of flaky pretzel with soft milk chocolate.

Just some advice -- buy a small bag because the medium didn't last the day in my house.
