Here are a few tasteful suggestions.
The First Watch restaurants won't just be serving their modestly priced breakfast and lunch items (the check average is about $8.50 per person). On Mother's Day, First Watches will offer each mom a box of Kansas City's own Russell Stover chocolates.
Area Steak 'n Shakes have a weekend promotion that's good for big families eating on Mom's Day. On Saturdays and Sundays, Steak 'n Shake offers one free kid's meal for every $8 spent (at participating locations).
If Mom still loves good, old-fashioned home cooking but doesn't want to do any good, old-fashioned cooking on Sunday: The venerable Village Inn in Mission will open. So will the Corner Cafe in Riverside, Rob's Cafe on Highway 40, Waid's in Prairie Village, Cozy's Cafe and Cheddar's Casual Cafe in Overland Park, Roxanne's Cafe in Parkville and, in the heart of Kansas City, Niecie's Restaurant at 6441 Troost.
Buffets at the area casinos will do a boom business on Mother's Day -- the Horizon's Buffet at the Ameristar Casino always has the best spread -- so plan on a wait there. But then again, you can always set Mom in front of a slot machine until a table comes open.
