|The official Sugar Mamma of Briarcliff Village|
The storefront at 4173 N. Mulberry Drive in the Briarcliff Village Shopping Center hasn't had great luck with bakeries so far. The Pastry Goddess and a second location for Westport's Napoleon Bakery did not succeed in this space.
But Kelly Hagan, along with her daughters Jordan and Peyton and her mother Barbara Hagan, believes she has the right recipe for success. She's been operating Sugar Mamma's Bakery since March.
"We bake everything on premises," says Hagan, who uses family recipes for her cinnamon rolls, cakes and cookies. Her grandparents used to operate a famous Kansas City, Kansas catering facility -- Hagan's Manor House -- in the 1960s and '70s.
Kelly Hagan is so trim and lithe that it's hard to believe she ever tastes anything she bakes -- though she insists that she does. But her mother also does a lot of the baking.
There aren't many tables and chairs in the combination bakery and restaurant, a pretty, girly place done up in shades of turquoise with chandeliers and tufted chairs. But the Hagans do serve light lunches (panini sandwiches and wraps) and several breakfast items. On Saturday mornings only, Kelly serves homemade sausage gravy on freshly baked biscuits.
The refrigerated display cases are filled with cookies -- chewy coconut macaroons, soft sugar cookies, maraschino cherry bars -- and pastries, including the Hagans' signature cupcakes.

The cupcakes are beautiful. Hagan changes the selection daily, though she makes sure to always feature top sellers. Among those are a red velvet cupcake and the "Hostess with the Mostess," a variation on the legendary Hostess cupcake: chocolate cake with a creamy filling. On the day I visited, the selections included a vivid yellow lemon cupcake, a cherry-filled version called Cherries Jubilee (pictured at right) and a carrot cake cupcake with cream cheese icing.
Sugar Mamma's is open Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays. During the summer, Hagan plans to stay open later on Thursday evenings to lure in patrons visiting the Briarcliff Village Farmers Market, which officially started this month.
