Dating and dumping a vegan

I've made meatless meals for dates, but my attempts to impress a vegan pale in comparison to Laura Beck. A food blogger with The Bold Italic in San Francisco, Beck has written a funny guide to the process of wooing, bedding and leaving a vegan.

She deconstructs what taking a potential boyfriend or girlfriend to a given vegan restaurant says about you. Along the way, she offers advice, such as this gem on the end of a second date:

When you get to your date's place, make out a little on the stoop and then cool your heels, slut. The whole not-buying-the-cow-when-you-can-get-the-milk-for-free metaphor works for vegans too.
Beck's writing about San Francisco, where there's a larger dating pool for vegans and a lot more meatless options. But in Kansas City, you can still make an impression if you're hoping to be lucky in vegan love.

With that in mind, here are what five vegan-friendly places in the Kansas City area will tell your date.

Eden Alley -- The first place that comes to mind when any vegetarian or vegan is in town. Show you're committed to the cause by attempting to eat a sweet potato burrito as big as your forearm at the Plaza restaurant.

Fud -- Comfort food is the calling card of this three-month old restaurant on the West Side. Stop by to share a brownie and cashew ice cream sundae after a matinee at the Crossroads Screenland.

Cafe Seed -- Some places simply make you cooler for having entered them. Cafe Seed fits the bill. The pace is relaxed here. You'll have time for conversation before the vegan BLT or burger arrives.

Waldo Pizza -- Just as vegetarians miss bacon, vegans miss cheese. Woo her with a mozzarella cheese pizza at the Waldo shop. Since your date will likely be interrupted by a small child from an adjoining booth, this gives you the chance to show you're stable and ready for a family.

Brody's Bakery -- The quickest way to anybody's heart is through sweets. Brody's Bakery has oatmeal cream pies and a vegan version of Twinkies. The Belton-based bakery delivery service, which also sells products in local Hy-Vee shops, means that this date is happening at your place. And if everything falls apart, you can always drown your sorrows in one of Brody's cherry bomb cupcakes.
