The issue of urban farming has only begun to be explored in Kansas City. The City Council's decision to change the development code on June 10 and provide more guidance for what's allowable within the city limits is the first step in a prolonged (and at times heated) discussion between locavores and neighborhood associations (who are not always mutually exclusive).

Pitch writer David Martin's piece in this week's print edition explores the history of the debate and how neighborhoods could benefit from an engaged class of urban farmers. It synthesizes a difficult issue well and looks at why all Kansas Citians should be part of the discussion.

So like if I grow all my weed in a row, in the back yard. And have them pick it then it's legal to sell as long as I call it crops. I think I might need some goats to cover up the weed and start a new crop of mushrooms to boot.
