Oklahoma Joe's is forcing itself into the national discussion of barbecue -- one Z-man sandwich at a time. The KCK barbecue stalwart is part of Vanity Fair's unranked list of "the country's best BBQ joints," which will appear in the magazine's August issue.
At what point does Oklahoma Joe's owe chef Anthony Bourdain a royalty check? The restaurant has been on a roll since Bourdain named the barbecue joint one of his 13 places to eat before you die for an article in Men's Health last summer.
Oklahoma Joe's and Lem's Bar-B-Q House are the only selections from the
Midwest on the list, which features six barbecue joints from the south.
The only choice I have my doubts about is Fatty 'Cue in Brooklyn, New York.
I
may miss the Thai food from my old neighborhood, but what passes for
barbecue in the land of hipsters wouldn't even sniff the judges table
in the open category at the American Royal. The only barbecue in
Brooklyn I want to eat is the barbecue at 17th and Brooklyn.

Robbie --
I stand corrected. Congrats on your showing at the Royal. I'll make it a point to take you up on your invitation the next time I'm back on the East Coast. I still stand by the idea that the barbecue in Brooklyn is forgettable; but I hope you're elevating the standards for everyone. The Thai food I was referencing was Em Thai -- a restaurant on Smith Street in Carroll Gardens.
