The pasta e fagioli was simmering and the cannolis were being filled to order yesterday at Pandolfi's Deli (548 Campbell Street). The newest restaurant in Columbus Park is officially open for business.
With a meatball sub that has the potential to be addictive and a hot muffaletta on the menu, Pandolfi's is hoping to carve out a niche with the lunch crowd downtown.
Fat City had a chance to tour the deli in June and talk to owner Jake Hendershot about his plans. He's using a lot of the same family recipes that were featured at the original Pandolfi's Deli in Liberty.
The meatball sub is killer. Lean ground beef meatballs slightly bigger than a golf ball are topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella and romano -- all of which melts into a hard roll from Le Monde Bakery. These are meatball pillows. You'll definitely be pleasantly sleepy after eating this sub.
Sandwiches range from $6.50 to $8 (half-sandwiches are available for $4.50). There's also a half-sandwich and soup or salad combo for $7.50. The desserts are made in house, including a giant chocolate chip amaretto brownie ($3) and a cannoli ($4, pictured above) filled with ricotta that has a light touch of honey.
Pandolfi's Deli is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Monday to Saturday). For more information, see pandolfisdeli.com or call 816-569-3663.
