Mall Santa requires a suspension of disbelief. Everyone has to agree that his workshop in the North Pole has been briefly relocated to a spot just a few feet from the food court.
Mall coffee shops require the same leap of faith. You have to believe that the wood paneling and mellow lighting are what allow Gloria Jean's Coffees to transcend the Independence Center Mall.
The trouble with that line of thinking is, you reach a certain age where you can see that Santa's beard is held on simply by a string around the back of his neck. And in the case of Gloria Jean's, it's when I realized that I couldn't get a strong cup of coffee.
The flavors are fine. The special blend is slightly nutty without being bitter. The problem is its iced coffee (pictured at right), which is almost translucent. It's the coffee equivalent of getting a fountain soda from the drive-through that is two-thirds filled with ice.

I work at Gloria Jeans and I agree some of the drinks need to be revised. We really push the frou frou sugar drinks as any chain must . . though if you choose to come and try us again I suggest the iced toddy which is a cold brew system which reduces the acidity but really smoothes the flavor. Our regular iced coffee is great for those who are not in need of such a bold flavor but for those of us that enjoy real coffee it's a lil' treat. Just some suggestions if you would like to stop by I'll hook you up!

You're right an Arnold Palmer is half-tea, half-lemonade. But this flavored lemonade drink had the same properties as an Arnold Palmer. The raspberry flavor was well-balanced with the lemonade, just as a well made Arnold Palmer will be the right combination of tea and lemonade.
An Arnold Palmer is half lemonade, half tea. Weren't you just drinking lemonade?
The secret of getting a good strong cup of coffee at GJ's or other mall caffeine shops is to buy an extra shot of espresso and dump it into your cuppa. If it's still not strong enough, get a second shot.
